Hugh Beale has been a Law Commissioner, with responsibility for the Commercial and Common Law Team, since 2000. He is a Professor of Law at the University of Warwick, where he has taught since 1987.

He was a Member of the Commission on European Contract Law, 1987-1999 (see (O.Lando and H.Beale, eds.), Principles of European Contract Law: Parts I & II (2000); and is a Member of Steering Group, Study Group for a European Civil Code, 1999-.

His books include Remedies for Breach of Contract (1980), (with W.Bishop and M.Furmston) Contract cases and materials (4th ed., 2001) and (with A.Hartkamp, H.Kötz and D.Tallon) Casebooks on the Common Law of Europe: Contract Law (2002). He is General Editor of Chitty on Contracts (29th ed., 2004).
